What makes Good Eats so great?
Some complain that Food Network should just be limited to instructional cooking shows morning, noon, and night. But not Good Eats.
It turns the traditional instructional cooking show into something entertaining. Fun. You name it.

In my library Alton Brown
The heat is on — not just in the streets, but at the Food Network, where season 9 of “Food Network Stars” is under way, and Alton Brown and his fellow judges decide which cooks stay and which ones go. “It’s a long, stressful competition,” concedes the James Beard Award-winning chef, who says there are always three things in his Marietta, Ga., refrigerator — none of them possum: homemade hummus, a “great deal” of mustard (“I only eat Gulden’s spicy brown, my wife likes French’s and we have several Dijons”) and lard. “We have friends who render pigs so we have mason jars full of the creamiest lard — you never know when you want to make pie crusts.” So much for Brown’s refrigerator — here’s what’s in his library. more

Alton Brown wows Charlotte crowd with equal parts theatrics, science and good eats
Apparently, CL had a hard time finding someone to cover events on Saturday - 4/20 - so it came to me (the new guy) to cover "An Evening with Alton Brown" at the Knight Theater in Uptown. Sadly, because nature abhors an unsuffering writer, I felt about two steps away from death, but that didn't stop me. I took some cold meds and bravely went Uptown, only to find that apparently it was either prom or Mez reopened with an even tighter dress code. I couldn't figure out how old the fancy people were, though. Definitely old enough to not have acne but young enough to still have hope in their eyes. more

Alton Brown Explains Why the Blue Milk from Star Wars ‘Ain’t Milk’
In Star Wars, the only thing more iconic than tauntauns, X-Wings, Death Stars, lightsabers, and bantha poodoo…is the blue milk. There’s only one problem, according to Alton Brown: “It ain’t milk.” more

Why Alton Brown can't eat Girl Scout cookies
After losing more than 50 pounds a few years back, celebrity chef Alton Brown not only remained in the culinary industry, he became an even more frequent contributor to the Food Network. In addition to his now-defunct show "Good Eats," he signed on as host of the pro competition series The Next Iron Chef, which starts its fifth season on November 4, and earlier this year served as a dedicated coach to contestants on the most recent installment of Food Network Star. That means that everywhere he turns, there's food. But while Brown, 50, has kept his eating habits in check, he admits it's not easy. more

Alton Brown Dishes on 'The Next Iron Chef' and How L.A. Shaped Him Into 'Bill Nye of the Kitchen'
Call him what you will ("The Food Nerd," "Bill Nye of the Kitchen", "The Dad You Wish You Had") but Alton Brown has revolutionized how America approaches cooking. It all started with Brown directing and writing the Food Network series "Good Eats," where for 14 seasons he explored the scientific inner-workings of foods we have come to know as commonplace. Since then, Brown has won a James Beard award for his work on TV, which has included roles as a mentor on "The Next Food Network Star," as a host of "Feasting on Asphalt," and as a commentator on "The Next Iron Chef" and "Iron Chef America." Preferred mode of travel?
"I would have to say that a 1979 Cessna 414A, which is what I own, is my favorite way of travel. But to me travel has never been about destinations. It’s always about the trip itself. Alton Brown on Flying, Airplane Food, and Why Frosting Is Definitely Not a Gel
We recently had a great conversation with Alton Brown, who was on his way between Los Angeles and Las Vegas to shoot The Next Iron Chef, the Food Network show he now hosts (which, in my humble opinion, does not fill the hole left by the end of the cultishly popular Good Eats series). As you’d expect, he dropped pearls of wisdom about on-the-road food, but as you might not expect, he also had quite a lot to say about his philosophy of travel—and his experience as a pilot. So over the next few weeks, we’ll share Browns’ theories, tips, travel tricks, and of course culinary thoughts in a series called "Alton Brown on…." We’ll start today with Alton Brown on flying, airline food, and the final word on whether cupcake icing is a gel. more...

Alton Brown & Jimmy Fallon Saber Champagne Using a 19th Century Sword
Chef, cookbook writer and TV host Alton Brown appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday to promote his new book, Good Eats 3. As in most of culinary bits on Jimmy's show, alcohol is involved, but in the case of Alton, there isn't any food to nibble on with the swill. In fact, there isn't all that much swilling, either -- most of the segment is taken up by Brown's demonstrations of strange technologies for opening wine bottles. Alton even claims (rather absurdly) not to own a corkscrew; he dismisses them as "unitaskers."... more
